Tall Stories
was designed as the launch event to open The Alnwick Garden and
establish it as a major arts venue in the northern region. It
was also the launch of their ongoing educational and community
programme which would involve local people and schools as active
participants in the project. Dodgy Clutch and balletLORENT worked
together to create this spectacular event.
Dodgy
Clutch and balletLORENT worked collaboratively both as artists
in residence in July 2003 to research and develop this new performance
and in September/October 2003 to devise a larger scale event in
autumn 2003.
'Tall
Stories' was the first opportunity for balletLORENT as a company
to work in collaboration with Dodgy Clutch. The scale and opportunities
represented by an outdoor event in general and Alnwick Gardens
in particular, was a new artistic challenge for the companies.
This project was an opportunity for performers from different
disciplines to work together. Artists from both companies had
a unique opportunity to explore and create innovative work, drawing
upon their own disciplines, sharing, communicating and finding
new forms of expression.
Theatrical
elements took the form of a night-time lantern and fire lit promenade
performance. Growing out of creative experimentation the audience
were free to encounter a series of stunning sculptural performance
and dance animations. The ideas for the show were inspired from
the story of The Selfish Giant.
Workshops
There
were workshops for schools throughout September. Four artists
worked with children to make lanterns and write songs for the
event.
Participation
The project
involved 20 artists and over 150 participants from 2 schools.
An estimated 2,300 people saw the events. |
