Fantastic
Follies was created in collaboration with The National Trust and
took place at Wallington Hall in Northumberland. It recreated
some of the original magic and frivolity associated with visits
to Wallington over 200 years ago. Artists, dancers, musicians
and designers worked together with local schools, community groups
and visitors to create this event. The Fantastic Follies was about
Art and Architecture in the landscape with artists building 5
of the follies in the grounds and Ryder architects constructing
the sixth.
The following
artists worked on the project:
Lisa
de Larny: the statue of the Earl of Folly.
Philippa Hodkinson with John Codd: 'Bed of Flowers'
Andy Plant: 'Temple
of Turbulence'
Malcolm Webster: 'Fountain of the Jilted Lover'
Tony Lewery:
'Chinoiserie'
and
Ryder/Amec 'Brief Encounter'
Workshops
took place in schools and community groups throughout the summer
and autumn to create three lantern processions and promenade performance
nights. The Earl of Folly, accompanied by his entourage of musicians
and other hangers-on, led the audience through the lantern-lit
gardens and around the lakes and introduced them to the different
Follies as they each in turn became animated in a son et lumiere
event. This series of visual images and tableaux illustrated the
theme of unrequited love.
This project
received financial support from Northern Arts' Regional Arts Lottery
Programme, Northern Rock, The Countryside Agency and Ryder/Amec.
